To clarify, jailbreaking IS legal. It ONLY voids your warranty if you send it jailbroken. If you restore it, its not jailbroken anymore and it will be still under warrenty.
What is jailbreaking?-Jailbreaking lets you gain root access and unlock the operating system thus removing any limitations imposed upon them by Apple. Once jailbroken, iPhone users are able to download many extensions and themes previously unavailable through the App Store via installers such as Cydia. A jailbroken iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch is still able to use the App Store and iTunes.(From wikipedia).
In other words, lets you mod your iDevice in ANY way you want.
Why should I jailbreak my iDevice?-Why pay so much money for something like an iPhone and not be able to customize it how you want?
-Does NOT slow your phone down.
-Endless customizations.
-Hundreds of tweaks. (For example, disable multitasking, show pictures in contact list, get TABS in Safari, extend call history(Very useful), and hundreds of more.
-Not enough stuff? Add hundreds of sources which adds thousands of more themes,games,entertainment,tweaks,utilities,widgest,cydgets, and so much more.
What is untethered jailbreak and why are we lucky Greenpois0n and Limera1n has it implemented?-Well, if it was a tethered jailbreak, you would have to plug it into the computer every time you reboot your device.
Having it untethered eliminates that and makes it SO much easier.
Wouldnt Apple patch it though?-No, first of all, its legal. The only illigal thing you can do is install cracked apps. If you do that, thats not my problem.
-Second of all, Greenpois0n found an exploit which Apple CANT patch it until they have an actual Hardware changes.
So what should I use, Greenpois0n or Limera1n?-They are both kind of the same because Chronic Dev Team(Makers or Greenpois0n) have used the same exploit as Limera1n, because they dont think they should release SHAtter exploit until later on.
I jailbroke mine with both. Limera1n's instructions were a bit easier especially to put in DFU, but after I jailbroke it, i experienced problems.
I use Greenpois0n now, and its MUCH better.
So I suggest GP.
How to Jailbreak with Greenpois0n.(ONLY WORKS WITH IOS 4.1)1. First of all, you should download a file on your computer called TinyUmbrella and save your SHSH(Optional but recommended).
2. Turn off your device and connect it to your computer.
3. Download greenpois0n.(Link above.)
4. Run greenpois0n.
5. Enter your device into DFU mode following the instructions on screen. (Run it so you can see what to expect then reset it, if you want to know how it works)
6. Click Jailbreak.
7. Wait about a minute while GP does its thing.
8. Done!
9. Look on your iDevice for a app called "Loader". Open it and install Cydia(Needed).
10. Browse through thousands of mods and have fun.
(Oh and if you install cracked apps. Thats NOT my problem, so if you get caught, its not my fault.)
How to jailbreak with Limera1n(Works only with ios 4.1!)1. Download limera1n(link above)
2. Follow step one from GP(Optional but recommended)
3. Plug in your device
4. Run Limera1n
5. Click on make it ra1n
6. It will give you instructions to put it in DFU mode.
7. It will do its thing and youll hopefully see a green droplet on the screen.
8. You will see a app called Limera1n on your device. Tap on it and install Cydia.
9. Done!
NEW*How to Jailbreak Apple TV!
1. You need a USB Stick that has been formatted to a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition that uses a GUID Partition Table.

http://atvusb-creator.googlecode.com/files/atvusb-creator-1.0.b10.zip3. Double click to extract the atvusb-creator-1.0.b10.zip archive on your Desktop. A folder called atvusb-creator1.0.b10 will created.
4. Connect USB stick to the computer
5. From the atvusb-creator 1.0.b10 folder, double click the atvusb-creator icon
6. You will be informed that the application was downloaded from the Internet. Click the Open button
7. From the Choose an Installation dropdown select ATV-Patchstick
8. From the Installation Options dropdown select ssh tools
9. Make sure the correct USB stick is selected for use.
10. Press the Create Using --> button.
11. ATV USB Creator will now download the AppleTV Update DMG. If you prefer to select this file yourself you could click the Choose a DMG button
12. The program will inform you when your patchstick has been completed successfully
13. Notice that your USB Stick has been renamed and now contains file
14. Eject the USB Stick and connect it to your AppleTV
15. Hold down the Menu and - buttons on the AppleTV remote until it reboots
16. Notice the Patchstick will now do its job and install SSH on the AppleTV.
17. When complete, remove the USB Stick from the AppleTV and unplug the device. Plug it back in to reboot
18. You can now access your AppleTV via SSH to perform a host of functions and hacks. You can find tutorials here
