Gandalf, I'm pretty sure Linux wasn't created as part of a "revolt" against the GUI. In fact, there are plenty of Linux systems with full-featured GUIs, Ubuntu probably being the most prominent example there is.
Rather, Linux was originally created as a college hobby by Linus Torvalds. It was later coupled with GNU's own project, which had the goal of creating a UNIX-compatible, free and open source operating system, which basically every operating system ever created has been based off of, DOS, Windows, and OS X included.
Not all Linux users necessarily feel superior to Windows users because they're not using Windows -- most of them probably do, but not all of them. Some just like the feel, others its openness, others for its stability, and so on.
That being said, I prefer Windows 7 for compatibility, stability, and ease of use. However, whenever I run a server, I try to use Arch Linux to set it up, since Linux is, in my opinion, much better for server use than Windows. no offense to Azellus
