11:45pm EST USA Time and Argonath RP 178.63.52.144:7777 is down.

There's a difference between KNOWING the path and WALKING the path.  - Major points if you know where this is from! :-)

It's been down since around 1:00 A.M. CET. Gandalf decided to go to bed as it started and said to just ride it out for the night until they get sick of attacking us.

SugarD, you know these things so here's a question for you.

Is there possible to make such a script to prevent DDosing, like refusing the connection for the same IP that joins several times straight? I'm a newb to this stuff so..

Unfortunately, there isn't because DDoS attacks are most often done using many zombified computers across the internet, which all use different IP addresses, so they are incredibly hard to differentiate from normal users.

There's surely somethign that could prevent them, like a FTP based system where a player has to first register an account on the forums and link it to the Account in order to play? I would definately support this system. But it has its ups and downs, like the new players flow into the server. But i've seen many server with this system and there's alot of players always, even new players. It's just a matter of registering and linking, amirite?

No.

It has nothing to do whether a player is registered or not.

This wouldn't make a difference at all.

The most important part is interacting with others and meeting people from around the world.

How would that stop you from sending data to the server? Like, the actual physical thing, not the SA:MP or TS or IV:MP server.

Registering an account or playing has nothing to do with DDoS attacks.
You do not have to be logged in or something to make an attack.

Phil messed up his quote a bit, but to agree with him, that is still not possible. The problem is that a DoS or DDoS attack is a spam of usually empty/blank packets, (or any others for that matter), which flood the server until it crashes or lags out. Now the issue is that when you connect to a server, you are sending and receiving packets. Regardless of authenticating or not, connecting to even get an authentication dialog still requires sending and receiving these packets. Even if you used the forum first, an attack would still hurt Argo to some degree, and they could still easily bypass all of that simply by attacking the IP address the server itself is hosted on, which they are doing already.

And why's that I hear this from 4 different people? Only SugarD had the most understandable reply, since he pointed out all the details, thanks man.

You're welcome. :)

Unfortunately, even super-expensive, intelligent software that can detect and slow down DDoS attacks can't prevent them or stop them completely, and often regular users can still be caught in the blocks when it happens.

Shake the hands with them buggers, get to know 'em, if they're meanies, send them off on their way. Though I've never had any experience with packet filters, so no idea how that would affect ping and server lag.
