We are talking on a scale of 5 Reichter or w/e which is really small unless the center of the earthquake is near the city.

Yes that's normal andrenalin increase, it happens on several situations either out of excitement or fear.

I used to live in California. Anyone who lives in southern Cali or around the Mojave knows that without a 5.0 earthquake it just isn't a good week..

In a place where earthquakes are extremely rare, if not unheard of. The fact that he's on the 12th story of a skyscraper can really make a 5.0 feel much worse, there's no questions he would be scared shitless.
