Title: Miami's Drum Cover Corner
Post by: Miami on July 09, 2009, 03:52:23 am
Heyas!  :D

Ive decided, (oh come on I had to).. to make a topic for all my drum covers to show my drumming, and also for you guys to leave comments and tell me what you think. You know.. what you thought, constructive crititism. Etc.

So below, I have all the drum covers ive posted so far. You guys proberly dunno most of them cos I play Progressive Rock/Metal. And.. that isnt exactly mainstream.

Anyways, I would say my style is technicality. Playing weird time signatures. I dont like playing stuff that is repetitive (Apart from Smokin' by Boston cos thats fun to play anyways). I put it in a few simple words. My style is Progressive Rock Drumming.

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhgl1-TE-2E&feature=channel_page[/yt]

Smokin - Boston

This song is a fun little song to play, its short yet quite enegetic. Its one the simplest things I play. But I still love it.

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_ybv7NQz1E&feature=channel[/yt]

Octavarium Instrumental Section - Dream Theater

This is actually an extract from a 25 Minute long epic. Its an awesome song to play, but I just posted this small instrumental section.
This section here is definatly the pinnicle of my drumming. Yet.. I make so many mistakes  :rofl: This is the sort of style I LOVE.. ADORE, to play. That hard, weird time signature, weird beat style. This small extract less than 3 minutes packs all the energy of one 7 minute song I think!

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER5wkq_58cE&feature=channel[/yt]

Sacred Sound Instrumental Section - IQ

Now the drummer of IQ, who is my drum teacher showed me how to play this recently and OMFG its so much harder than what you see here ladies and gentlemen... Anyways, yeah this is a piece of complelty uncountable time signatures unless you know what it is before hand (Try counting 1 2 3 4 to this..). Very very energetic piece, requires a lot of energy, so much that at the end I am late when hitting crashes.. damn.

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOqo52FlA1U[/yt]

The Final Countdown - Europe

Oh come on I had to! Its a classic! Its cheezy.. yet its EPIC! Oh and IGNORE MY HAIR LOL

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLsouO-XxUY[/yt]

Highway Star - Deep Purple

Now, this song was introduced to me by TeaM-Snake awhile back while I was DJing, and it was requested. I listened to it, and love it. Its an absolute classic rock song. Also fun to play the drums, got alot of fast bits to it, like fills, and chops around the kit.

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W9YgmvKsuc[/yt]

Knights of Cydonia - Muse

This song is fun to play.. but lordy, its harder than it looks.. way way harder than it looks. Cos of the way the hihat is played.. on every upbeat.
But yeah, this is Knights of Cydonia, with a hint of my styling to it.. double bass at the end, etc  :D

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhuA-XtrYdw[/yt]

Eminence Front - The Who

Also a good song, it was one of the first songs I ever learnt.. back in the day  :D
I did some EQing to the drums (so it sounds alot better than other vids), and also used a drumless version of the track.

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ3Vff_QS1c[/yt]

Thunderstruck - AC/DC

Good, simple song to play! It was requested by Traser. I did it cos it was so easy  :lol:

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmsMAtWpxQk[/yt]

Biaxident - Liquid Tension Experiment

I bet no one else in Argonath knows this piece, but if you dont - it doen't matter! Just watch the drumming!
Its a mad piece with so many different styles, time signatures, beats, and.. its just general crazyness. Awesome :D
Im actually quite proud of this cover :]

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbtmmPgAIF0[/yt]

Sacred Sound Instrumental Section - IQ *REDO*

I decided to redo this, Judging by many people's response to this video when I showed it to them - it seems to be the most impressive. So I decided to take it to the next level and make it even more impressive O_o I made it even harder by adding alot more to it, and played it with no mistakes >: )

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jadV6ecqgIo[/yt]

Frequency - IQ

This song gets more and more harder as it goes by.. so I suggest to watch the whole thing. Its a very very demanding song as it requires alot of stamina.. it took me four takes to get this right and I am very happy with this take :)

This pic was taken before the drumhead arrived for the first floor tom. So that explains why there is no head on it.

Anyways, thats all for now. Ill post more here, when I post more on YouTube.

Very funny joke there  :lol:

Anyways, guys like I said above.. I might not be able to do all covers, cos my general drumming style is overal technicality.
Iron Maiden maybe exhausting but in no wai involves much technique. BUT when I have time maybe I'll post some Maiden covers. But for now I'm sticking with getting my list of planed covers done first.

holy shit  :conf:  How much all those drumbs cost ?

You don't wanna know :rofl: And it's not complete yet, still need to get more cymbals..  :lol:

Also, I gave Run to the Hills a try.. omfg. Seriously.. cos of the speed of the hihat, its just insane.
Maybe ill try again in future, but omg. I epic failed on it today  :lol:

Try AC/DC Thunderstruck  :cool: I think you can do it, with such skill.

Oh lordy, Thunderstruck has to be THE easiest AC/DC song..
I mean, no offence to AC/DC fans (David  :razz:).. but the drumming in all AC/DC songs are incredibly easy and thats why many drummers like to play to AC/DC.

When I play to them.. I tend to get bored outta my mind by playing the same beat over and over for 3 minutes  :rofl:

Maybe ill do it, for the sake of it  ;)
But like I said.. when I get my list of stuff done.

Do something from Rush, you say you play in a progressive style do you? Rush is one of my favorite bands. Try playing Venetian Snares - Gentlemen too lol, I seen a vid of some guy playing it on drums, pretty good.

OMG, you like Rush too? I LOVE them!  :D

But yeah, as Neil Peart is one of the gods of drumming.. his style is really really hard. I can kinda play Tom Sawyer and YYZ, and some tracks on the Snakes & Arrows album.. but Xanadu has to be the most fun Rush song to play imo!  :banana:

I have aparently 'infrindged copyright' on the 'Knights of Cydonia' video. Ofcourse, I have taken the liberty of sending YouTube a dispute form as I will not tolerate this.. all I did was post a cover, I did not intend to freakin infrindge copyright.  :roll:

So either for now, or whatever, that video is off.

Agreed that the Maiden songs aint much technical, but Nicko McBrain is a hell of a drummer you gotta agree to that :D Especially if you think about his age ;)

This what I did to one of my drumsticks while drumming today  :D

(http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii119/MiamiSforza/111111.jpg)

You should've seen how I played Crash in Finland. I used the soft-top sticks or what ever they are called to play crash and then the whole top flew off in the middle of the song :D

Good thing was that the other guy that was playing drums had another pair and then I played with them :P

Oh yeah nylon tips  :D I might start using them or testing them, havnt tried yet. I heard they make cymbals sounds brighter and cleaner. Ill see when I try!

Also, remember to bring more than one pair of drumsticks to a gig, ive learnt that from many people  :)

Yeah was thinking the exact same thing, either ill be getting Vic Firth sticks, or going back to my very first brand I had - Pro-Mark

I use 7A (the lightest, most thinnest) Round tips or barrel tip sticks. Which could be the reason why mine are breaking so easily.. but tbh I really dislike using thick sticks.. they feel.. eugh to me. lol

Ill try Vic Firth 7A sticks, or their equivilent. And also their Nylon sticks too  :D

Thin Sticks are a waste of money.

Thin Sticks are a waste of money.

It all comes down to preference. I myself just like thin sticks cos of the feel, and the vibration, and ofcourse - the lightness.

But, soon, like I said, im gonna start experimenting with different sticks, sizes, thickness, tips, and even wood etc

The most expensive sticks I have are REALLY heavy, and I mean really compared to my normal ones, they are Neil Peart signature sticks.
They arny really that much thicker, but they are abit. And they are made from Japanese Oak (oooh fancy  :razz:) so they are strong, meaning that hits sound louder.
The tip is teardrop tip.. which tbh, I dont like that much.. I just dont like the sound that teardrop tips produce.

What stick do you use?

I don't like sticks with pointy heads, they make a weird sound on a snare drum.

Absolutly agree yeah.

I actually usually play barrel tips, especially when I first started playing the school kit cos there are many barrel tip sticks at school, but they are actually quite hard to find/buy the right sized sticks with barrel tips.. which is annoying.  :(
So im left with round tips. But they are fine.

What type of wood do you play, or simpley.. what weight do you prefer your sticks?
I just go with lightest option, in my mind - Light Sticks = Speed which is exactly what I need for the stuff I play. This is just normal American Hickory.

Good job, what kinda sticks you use...  :roll:

Zildjian 7A Round Wooden Tip sticks, American Hickory, and if im brave - Pro-Mark 747 Neil Peart Signature Sticks, Teardrop Tip, Japanese Oak.  :D

I think thats a nice detailed answer  :lol:

Yea, but not on summer, and the drum kit is for "later" since I have to study xylophone and the "other" drum kit where I play drum tracks

but If I would have a drum kit @ my home, I would be pretty.. pro..

I have studied those instuments for 6 years now.. and Im still a noob (not a newb) :/

Post by: Miami on July 29, 2009, 03:55:19 am
Ill be doing a new wave of drum videos soon, cos looking back at most of those videos.. I aint happy with them.
Im making TOO many mistakes, and doing wrong beats, and bits at the wrong section!!!  :cry:

So, what im gonna do it redo most of those videos and I will do it correctly, and play alot better.
Oh and also, ill play looking like im enjoying myself, rather than a brick on a chair...

Also guys, just to let you know, Ive changed my mind, and cant do requests now guys. Cos the way my drumming and self teaching works is like this:

1) Choose a technique to learn
2) Pick a song with that technique I want to learn, e.g Offbeats/linear playing, would be Knights of Cydonia.
3) Once Ive learnt to play that song, I can now play the technique ive learnt in the song and can apply it in other songs, and everywhere!

Clever eh? ;)

A few of those songs I posted, I cant actually play 100% yet, such as the Octavarium Instrumental, you see me playing the wrong beat, making mistakes.. etc, which is also another one of my self teaching styles; to play to my limit. Pick a song I can barely play, but at the same time learn to play it whilst focusing on getting technique right.

Ive been doing this for 10 months since I started drumming, and tbh, it has really pushed me and got me to where I am now.

I see people on YouTube who have drum lessons.. (YES, drum LESSONS with teachers), who have been playing for 2 years, and yet dont play anything outside 4/4 simple rock beat or still suck at drumming. What im saying is, I think its a matter of motivation and self teaching style that has got me where I am in a matter of 10 months.

The whole song, Octavarium is a hard HARD song.. all the way up there in the list hard drumming songs imo. Yet I can play 90% of it, im really proud of this.

Its been 10 months, ive only just begin drumming pretty much.. just think where I could be in 3 years? :)

So to all people learning instruments, even if its not drums. So, guitar, piano, bass.. whatever, remember to be motivated.
Your style is your style, dont let anybody try and change it. If you have an inspiration (mine is Mike Portnoy), then use he/she as an aim, think to yourself, 'One day, I will be like him/her, I will be able to play like him/her' etc. It really helps..
Push youself to the limit, dont be afraid to try and play something you know you cant.. cos eventually if you practise hard, you will and then you've unlocked another stage in your learning process.

Right now Im learning Metropolis Part 1, and Take The Time by Dream Theater, at the beginning when I chose to learn these songs (2/3 weeks ago) I coulnt play them.. I would even hesitate many times when playing.. but after awhile, practising. I managed to begin to get there, now I can ALMOST play both of them through, but still learning.. yet its only been a few weeks.

I tend to ignore traditional drum teachers who stick to curriculems or books. But one drum teacher ive had who I had a session with last month is a man called Andy Edwards  (http://www.zildjian.com/En-Us/artists/artistDetail.ad2?artistID=2763) , he is the drummer of one of my favorite bands - IQ. And he doesnt teach to a book or whatever, and I loved this.. he just told me to play and whereever I was doing something wrong, he corrected it. This is another thing I suggest.. if you want a drum teacher, get one that is actually a professional DRUMMER.. not a traditional teacher!!

lol, sorry for the long post, I think I got carried away. Anyway.. my main point is, I will be posting more videos soon. :D

I have done another drum cover! This one is Eminence Front by The Who (you can hear it on k-dst, in SA alot). Its an easy pesy song, but I like it. Also, it was one of the first songs I learnt on the drums ever  :D

I did some EQing to my drums, so they sound ALOT better compared to my other videos, and they also sound a little like the drums in the actual song (which are removed in this version, so the only drums you hear are mine).
I also tried uploading the video in a larger size.. so you get a 'HD' option.. but it isnt HD ofcourse.. just a bigger picture. The picture itself is still pretty much crap, cos like my other videos.. it was filmed using a Mini-DV Camera which is litrally vintage now... hopefully ill be getting a HD Camera soon, or atleast.. just a new cam.

You have a nice taste of music.
Also, freaking fantastic job.

I'm thinking about buying myself a normal guitar and try some.
I have no idea how to do though, and I just threw away my one and only plectrum.

I like those hihats, I too also have ZXT Hihats.. tbh, I wouldnt say I love them. But neither do I hate them. Just in the middle  :D

I find your large majority of cymbal brands/models on one kit quite funny  :lol:

Thank you xD. Every cymbal except the crash/china and the hi hat bottom were bought. the Hi hat bottom, i cant remember. The crash came with our original kit, which was 1 bass, that cymbal, shitty hi-hat, tom, and a snare.

Big bump lol? Miami, I was curious (i thought this was an important question -_-) as to what kind of mics do you use to record your drumset?

Big bump lol? Miami, I was curious (i thought this was an important question -_-) as to what kind of mics do you use to record your drumset?

Believe it or not - I use one crappy-cheap vocal mic (not even a proper professional mic) as an overhead.
It records the sound kinda okay, then I just EQ the sound and presto! Sounds great. :]

But not as good as it would with proper mics though - which is why I will be getting a set of drum mics sometime. Along with an Audio Interface to plug all the mics into my laptop.. thats gonna cost alot :x

Cos my kit is so big - micing it up will be a challenge. Both technically, and economically.

Right now, I am definatly not doing any covers.
I'm not even posting any drum cover videos at all right now cos I'm busy with college.. so sorry.

I might be able to post some covers in the holidays, which start next week.. but I doubt I can cos I'll have assignments to do.
Really - and this might sound surprising and somewhat silly - but, I think I'll be getting my proper free time at home, back in a few years.. as in, when I have finished College.

Your hand technique is horrible.

I know :D

But, since then it's improved alot though.
For example, I used to hold the sticks so weirdly with my hands so far up them that it ruined so many thing. But really, stupidly of me.. I only realised it was this recently. So I've fixed that issue now, and it's improved so many things from bounce to speed!

Do you know if of any equalizing programs that run on a decent OS?

OSX Being the only 'decent' OS out there imo..
Logic Express/Pro is the music industry standard for mastering/EQing/mixing etc etc

If you want anything on Windows - then I suggest Audicity cos its free, although I don't use it.. I've heard its great.
But really, when it comes to Windows I am not entirly sure.

I understand Mac may be better for music and photoshop, but I like to use decent, widely-used, not costing an arm and a leg for the same hardware as a pc, OS. What about linux? Anyone?

More videos..

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbtmmPgAIF0[/yt]

Sacred Sound Instrumental Section - IQ *REDO*

I decided to redo this, Judging by many people's response to the first video when I showed it to them - it seems to be the most impressive. So I decided to take it to the next level and make it even more impressive O_o I made it even harder by adding alot more to it, and played it with no mistakes >: )

-------------------------

[yt=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jadV6ecqgIo[/yt]

Frequency - IQ

This song gets more and more harder as it goes by.. so I suggest to watch the whole thing. Its a very very demanding song as it requires alot of stamina.. it took me four takes to get this right and I am very happy with this take :)
